Creating Food Fraud Resilience

Food fraud is a hot topic for most major European manufacturers, with olive oil and eggs being particularly vulnerable. Barilla appointed NSF International to audit their key suppliers across Europe, Russia and North Africa against NSF’s bespoke food fraud assessment standard. The audit provides a rigorous and thorough assessment of the supply chain’s ability to manufacture products to a set specification and ensures that suitably robust controls are in place to prevent possible adulteration and cross-contamination. The first round audit results were the basis of a detailed set of recommendations to Barilla, specifying the required rigorous controls for all their suppliers and giving the company confidence that they are producing legally compliant food, free from adulterants or unacceptable contaminants. The audit programme has been extended and NSF continues to work with Barilla ensuring the integrity and quality of their supply.
